This week, I aired a special minisode of the podcast in honor of #HappierLaborDay. “Happier Labor Day” was a movement created by Gretchen Rubin to encourage all of us to reflect on our work-life and how we could make it happier.
Now, as a full-time writer and creative, I’m pretty dang happy with my work. But I still found it helpful to do this exercise to give myself time to think about what’s working well and what I’d like to change to make my writing life as happy as it can possibly be.
Some of my observations:
- Connecting with other authors who are passionate about what they do stokes my enthusiasm for my own creative work.
- Takeaway: Never miss my Mastermind Group with my fellow authors
- Takeaway: Get to at least one industry conference per year (maybe two).
- I love podcasting, and I want to do more of it. (On Monday’s episode of the podcast I mentioned that I’d like to start a podcast aimed at my fiction audience.) But I need to figure out a way to do this other podcast without needing to create a huge stream of new content every single week. (I came up with a pretty creative solution.)
- Takeaway: Do more guest podcasting and invite guests on this show.
- Right now, I’m very busy. I realized that I like being busy and having multiple creative projects in progress at once, but I need to close some boxes before I open new ones.
- Takeaway: I systematically listed out all of my ongoing and upcoming projects and broke them down into smaller steps that would encourage completion.
- I want to invest more in myself and in my business!
- Takeaway: Invest in that online course to learn about content marketing for fiction!
- Takeaway: Work up to two industry conferences per year to educate myself and connect with other authors.
If you haven’t done your own Happier Labor Day project yet, I’d highly recommend it. Here are some questions you can ask yourself to get started:
- What do I love about my work? (What do I want more of?)
- What don’t I love about my work? (What would I like less of?)
- What tasks do I feel best utilize my unique talents?
- Which tasks do I feel are a waste of my time? Could I pare down or eliminate these tasks?
- Where would I like to reinvest that time?
- If I can’t pare down or eliminate those tasks I don’t like, how might I make them more streamlined or enjoyable?
- Who do I enjoy at work? Why?
- What’s my vision for the future of my career?
- Which of my career role models have already achieved what I want?
- What could I do this year to start building toward that?
